Gail Bagwell DNP, APRN, CNS, FNAP, FAAN is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) Neonatal Network and Clinical Instructor at Ohio State University College of Nursing.  In her role at NCH, she works with an interdisciplinary teams to provide consulting, education, QI services to referring hospital and their staff. 

​

Dr. Bagwell’s scholarship centers on her expertise of high-risk neonates and families, specializing in Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and Safe Sleep.  Her doctoral work focused on improving breastfeeding rates for babies diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome.  Her work in safe sleep for neonates has been at the local, state and national levels having edited the National Association of Neonatal Nurses Safe Sleep Guidelines.  She has disseminated her work in these areas through presentations, videos, media and publications.

She served on the National Association of Neonatal Nurses Board of Directors from 2015 to 2023 as a Director at Large and then President of the organization.   She is also a member of the Central Ohio Association of Neonatal Nurses, American Nurses Association (ANA), ANA-Ohio, Association of Women’s Health and Neonatal Nursing, Academy of Neonatal Nursing, Council of International Neonatal Nursing, National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Sigma Theta Tau, American Academy of Nursing and National Academies of Practice.   She has published in neonatal and medical textbooks as well as journals that are used internationally.  She has co-chaired committees at NCH, at the state and national level to improve neonatal health with interprofessional colleagues and worked with an interdisciplinary team to develop a NICU in Guyana.

Dr. Bagwell received BSN from West Virginia Wesleyan College, MSN-Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist from the University of Cincinnati and DNP from Chatham University. 

Christy Schunn

Christy S. Schunn, LSCSW, is executive director of the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network, Inc. She has a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Bethel College and a Master of Social Welfare from the University of Kansas.

 

Ms. Schunn is licensed as a Clinical Social Worker in the State of Kansas and a member of the International Society for the Study and Prevention of Perinatal and Infant Death (ISPID), and the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA). She is a board member of the Center for Research on Infant Birth Survival (CRIBS), Emberhope Youthville, past board member of Postpartum Support International Kansas Chapter and is an adjunct social work instructor at Bethel College.

 

Christy currently provides counseling to those affected by perinatal and infant loss, co-leads the Stillbirth Awareness Working Group USA Mutual Support Workstream and conducts research and development on the KIDS Network Safe Sleep Instructor Certification Program which uses a multi-pronged approach to embed safe sleep with culturally tailored curriculum for priority populations across the United States.

Lori Winkler, RN

Safe Kids St. Louis Coordinator/Injury Prevention Nurse Coordinator

Lori Winkler, MSN, RN, TNS, CPEN is the Injury Prevention Nurse Coordinator and Safe Kids St. Louis Coalition Coordinator led by SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. For more than 40 years, Lori has worked in emergency medicine as a paramedic and emergency department nurse providing emergent care to children and adults. 

 

Lori serves as the Chairperson for the Missouri Injury Violence Prevention Advisory Committee and is a member of the Missouri Infant Safe Sleep Coalition. In addition, she regularly attends the Child Fatality Review Panel for five Missouri counties and is part of a newly formed regional injury prevention subcommittee whose goal is to reduce infant and child fatalities.

Lori has presented nationally on pediatric injury prevention including infant safe sleep at the Cribs for Kids’ and Safe Kids Worldwide’ s conferences. To date, Lori has trained more than 1,500 First Responders, Healthcare Providers, Community partners. In 2015, Cardinal Glennon became the first hospital west of the Mississippi to achieve gold-level certification as a safe sleep hospital. Lori serves as the Chairperson for the Safe Sleep Champion committee for SSM Health overseeing the system’s fifteen ministries in Missouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

Lori has received numerous awards for her work including, St. Louis Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Award, Cribs for Kids’ Women of Achievement “Making A Difference” Award, and “Community Nurse of the Year” award at Cardinal Glennon, and Generate Health’s Standing Up for Black Mothers & Babies: “Dr. Corinne WalentikProvider/Practitioner Champion Award”. She has also received certification as a Trauma Nurse Specialist and a Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse.

Lori’s goal is to prevent children from ending up in emergency departments and to reduce preventable deaths. She is passionate about educating and empowering parents to make responsible choices for their children’s safety and well-being.

Michelle Barry is a dedicated advocate for infant health and safety, currently serving as the President of Safe Infant Sleep, an organization committed to educating parents and caregivers about safe sleep practices for infants. Driven by her concern over the proliferation of unsafe sleep products on the market, Michelle became an ASTM volunteer and actively participates in several juvenile product subcommittees responsible for creating and updating safety standards for infant sleep products. She and her educators work tirelessly to disseminate vital safe sleep information, aiming to normalize safe practices and reduce the use of unsafe products.
