In addition to theABC’s of safe sleep, the Vigo County Health Department is proud to present the first Safe SleepTrailer providing an immersive educational experience for all Hoosier caretakers. SUIDs are sudden, unexpected infant deaths that occur among infants younger than one yearold, and whose cause of death is not immediately obvious prior to an investigation. Sleep-relateddeaths often are caused by suffocation and are classified as accidental suffocation andstrangulation in bed. These deaths are largely preventable with consistent use of safe sleeppractices. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a SUID that remains unexplained after: acomplete clinical history review of both the infant and the parents, autopsy that includestoxicology and a complete scene investigation with interviews and reenactment. The goal for safesleep education across Indiana is to make sure that infants reach their first birthday. From 2020to 2024, over two thousand infant deaths were reported and 554 were due to unsafesleep/SIDS/unknown according to a report from Indiana Department of Health.
