Updated: Aug 5

Plus: How to Keep Safe Sleep Routines on Track in Warm Weather

When the sun is shining and the days stretch long, summer becomes the perfect time for little ones to explore and connect with the world around them. For toddlers aged 2 and under, the best activities are simple, safe, and engaging, especially when shared with a loving caregiver.

But while playtime may shift outdoors, maintaining safe sleep routines remains just as important. Whether traveling, managing a new schedule, or navigating hot nights, consistency matters. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), safe sleep practices are essential year-round to reduce the risk of sleep-related infant deaths.

Summer Play Ideas

Sensory Play in Nature

Sensory bins or gentle nature walks can spark curiosity and support early development while keeping playtime calm and engaging.

Let your toddler explore soft feathers, textured items like noodles, smooth stones, spaghetti, or colorful sand in a shaded outdoor space.

Just be sure all materials are age-appropriate and always supervised. Nature belongs in their hands, not their mouths!

Nature Collage Creations

Collect leaves, flowers, and petals in a bright little pail your toddler can carry. Press them onto sticky paper or tape to create a fun collage. This hands-on activity encourages curiosity, color recognition, and fine motor skills. Plus, it’s a great way to slow down together and enjoy the simple beauty of nature.

Water Table Fun

A water table filled with plastic cups, balls, and spoons provides the perfect cool-down activity. Toddlers love to pour, splash, and scoop, add bubbles for extra fun!

Keep the water shallow and never leave your child unattended. Supervision is key, no matter how small the splash.

Safe Sleep Reminders for Summer

Longer days and warmer nights can throw off routines, but safe sleep is non-negotiable. The AAP recommends:

  • Always place your baby on their back for naps and bedtime.

  • Use a firm, flat sleep surface like a crib or bassinet with a fitted sheet only, no pillows, toys, or loose bedding.

  • If room-sharing, make sure baby sleeps in their own space (not in your bed).

  • Dress baby in lightweight sleepwear and keep the room cool to prevent overheating.

  • Couches and armchairs are never safe for infant sleep, whether alone, with a person, or a pet.

  • Keep your baby’s environment smoke- and vape-free.

If you're traveling, replicate your child’s safe sleep environment as closely as possible. Bring

a portable crib, fitted sheet, and familiar items like a white noise machine or bedtime book.

With a little preparation, summer can be filled with safe, memorable moments for both day and night. From playful splashes to peaceful naps, each experience helps your toddler grow, thrive, and feel secure.

Because every child deserves a safe start, and that includes safe play and safe sleep.
